The "2023 Key Laboratory Academic Committee Work Conference" of the Jiangsu Key Laboratory of Atmospheric Environment Monitoring and Pollution Control was held in Shanghai on December 16, 2023.
This Academic Committee meeting consisted of 29 members, including committee members and invited experts from the key laboratory. The participants included Academician Hao Jiming (Chair of the Academic Committee), Academicians Jiang Guibin, Liu Wenqing, Zhang Yuanhang, He Kebin, He Hong, Zhang Xiaoye, Professors Chai Fahe, Chen Jianmin, Liao Hong, Huang Cheng, Gong Shanling, Chen Changhong, Chen Mindong, Feng Yinchang, Fu Pingqing, Ge Maofa, Liu Jianguo, Shao Min, Wang Tijian, Wang Xinming, Wang Zifa, Wu Haisuo, Yang Xin, Zhu Fahua, Zheng Junyu, Fu Qingyan, Hu Jianlin, and Li Li. Professor Chen Haishan, the Vice President of Nanjing University of Information Science & Technology, was invited to attend and speak at the meeting.
In his address, Vice President Professor Chen Haishan expressed gratitude for the long-term support of the committee members and experts, and briefly introduced the recent development of the university. He stated, "The university will continue to support the construction of key laboratories and hopes the committee members will provide valuable suggestions to help achieve greater accomplishments in our environmental disciplines and key laboratory construction."
Academician Hao Jiming chaired the annual report meeting of the Academic Committee, and Professor Hu Jianlin, the Deputy Director of the Key Laboratory, reported on the construction and development of the laboratory over the past year, the main scientific research progress, and the future work plan.
Professor Hu Jianlin, the Executive Deputy Director of the Key Laboratory and Vice Dean of the School of Environmental Science and Engineering, provided a detailed report on the laboratory's work progress and main achievements in 2023:
(1)Continuous Development in Discipline Construction:
The "Environmental Science and Engineering" discipline entered the "Soft Science World-Class Discipline" ranking, placing 61st globally.
The "Environmental Engineering" program was approved for the provincial-level "Excellent Engineer Education Training Plan 2.0".
The "Environmental Science" program passed the 2023 comprehensive assessment of undergraduate majors in Jiangsu Province's general universities.
Significant Achievements in Scientific Research:
The laboratory was awarded 24 new projects at national and provincial/ministerial levels, including 3 provincial projects, 13 National Natural Science Foundation projects, 1 Ministry of Education industry-education cooperation project, and 3 commissioned projects (each over 400,000 RMB), with approved research funding totaling 47.3 million RMB. The laboratory had 44 ongoing projects with funding of 68.116 million RMB, bringing the total funding to 115.416 million RMB.
Some of newly funded projects include: National Key R&D Program project on "Climate-Vegetation- Chemistry Coupled Model Development and Its Application in Forecast" led by Professor Yue Xu (19 million RMB). National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars project on "Aerosol Geochemistry" led by Professor Zhang Yanlin (4 million RMB). National Natural Science Foundation of China and the Macao Science and Technology Development Fund (NSFC-FDCT) on "Atmospheric Organic Matter Liquid Phase Oxidation Experiments and Field Studies Based on 'Solution Phase-Single Particle-Aerosol'" led by Professor Gai Xinlei (1.95 million RMB).
The laboratory published 293 academic journal and conference papers, including 196 SCI papers in prestigious international journals like Nature Communications, npj Climate and Atmospheric Science, Advanced Functional Materials, and Science Bulletin. The laboratory was granted 38 invention patents and 8 utility model patents.
Further Improvement in Talent Team Quality:
Professor Liao Hong was awarded the "National Women's Merit Pioneer" title and selected as a "Highly Cited Scientist" by Clarivate Analytics.
Professor Zhang Yanlin received funding from the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars.
Professors Shen Yafei and Jin Jianbing were selected for the national plan for high-level young talents abroad (Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, Qiming Plan).
Professor Chen Mindong received the Jiangsu Province Science and Technology Progress Third Prize.
Professor Li Ke won the "Xie Yibing Young Meteorological Science and Technology Award" and was selected as a "Highly Cited Scientist" by Clarivate Analytics.
Professor Wang Junfeng received the "China Environmental Science Society Young Scientist Gold Award".
Professor Huang Lin won the special prize in the "2023 Jiangsu University Foreign Students Teaching Observation Competition".
Associate Professor Li Nan received the "Aerosol Science and Technology Innovation Award" from the Chinese Society of Particuology and was selected as an "Outstanding Young Talent" by the Jiangsu Science and Technology Think Tank.
The laboratory members guided students in academic competitions, winning a total of 7 national and provincial awards.
Continuous Deepening of Cooperation and Exchange:
The laboratory renewed its agreement with Harvard University, continuing to send outstanding laboratory personnel and students to establish the Harvard University-NUIST Joint Laboratory for Air Quality and Climate to carry out joint training and in-depth cooperative research.
Professor Daniel Jacob, a foreign expert in the laboratory, received the "Jiangsu Province International Science and Technology Cooperation Award".
The laboratory successfully hosted the 19th US-China Carbon Consortium (USCCC) Annual Meeting.
In 2023, the laboratory invited experts and scholars from various fields to visit the laboratory or organized 28 online academic conferences.
The laboratory approved 12 open projects and concluded 17, continuously improving the quality of the project.
The members of the Academic Committee and invited experts reviewed the construction and development of the key laboratory. They fully affirmed the fruitful achievements and progress made by the key laboratory in the past year in high-level scientific research, undertaking and contributing to major projects, and talent and team building. At the same time, they suggested that the laboratory should focus on the country's "Four Orientations" and, in conjunction with the national ecological civilization construction "4561" strategy, grasp the future development planning and design of the laboratory.
In his concluding remarks, Academician Hao Jiming pointed out that the laboratory needs to further clarify its positioning, highlight complementary advantages, and strengthen exchange and collaborative cooperation, in order to play a leading role in science and technology for achieving and improving air quality in the Yangtze River Delta region under the context of the dual carbon goals.
